Going Electric
That was it for the next couple of years until I was enthused to play better after seeing a friend of my elder brothers playing, at the time I thought he was an amazing player, certainly compared to me, I had also discovered Jimi Hendrix and Cream so I started worrying my parents for an Electric guitar and Amp. In true parental entrepreneur style I was told it was too
expensive but if I could pay half then my mum would help. So I started saving from my Saturday job for my first electric outfit. I also had a go on an electric guitar at a friend of a friend’s house – I was hooked. My search for a guitar was intensified, I came across a second-hand one that included an amp for £15 and so I arranged to see it. Not knowing what I was looking at did not stop me. It was a bright red one; a Freshman, it played amazingly compared to my acoustic and had a smart little 5 watt Selmer amp. The purchase was completed and I could not wait to get it home and make a racket. In reality it was a plank of wood that had been cut into the shape of a guitar and had all the electrics fitted to it. I think it was an American catalogue purchase (Sears). The little amp was clean at all volumes so I could not make the Hendrix sounds I heard. My quest for sound nirvana had started and has not stopped.
